Universidad Complutense de Madrid :: NILS mobility project

Abel Extraordinary Chair - Profiles

Marcial Escudero

Venue: CEES, Department of biology, University of Oslo, Norway.

From: March 8, 2010

to: May 7, 2010

Marcial Escudero is a FPU PhD student at the Department of Molecular biology and biochemial engineering, at Universidad Pablo Olavide, Spain.

His project, together with Thomas Hansen, consists of to test the adaptive value of chromosome number at macro-evolutionary level (tribe Cariceae) as well as microevolutionary level (Carex sects. Ovales and Spirostachyae). And collaboration in the improvement of the software SLOUCH.

About his work:

"In principle, we do not know which results are more plausible since both theories (adaptative value or not of chromosome numbers in Carex) have been previously reported (Luceño and Castroviejo, 1991, Bell, 1992; Hipp, 2007; Hipp et al., 2009). Nevertheless, this study will be crucial to shed light in one of most striking question in the evolution of the holocentric chromosome numbers. In addition, we expect to improve some of the aspects of SLOUCH previously cited or others aspects which we consider of major interesting in our planned experience with SLOUCH."

About his stay:

The results from his stay will be presented by poster in the International Congress of the Society of Molecular Biology and Evolution (4-8 July, 2010, Lyon, France). In addition, in the next dates a paper with the results of the stay will be sumetted to a prestigious international jounal. At present, the paper is in preparation.
