Universidad Complutense de Madrid :: NILS mobility project

Abel Extraordinary Chair - Profiles

Elisa Buforn

Venue: University of Iceland, Iceland.

From: June 14-20, 2010

Elisa Buforn is professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), School of Physics.

The aim of her visit us the study of rupture process of earthquakes in two regions of the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR): Iceland and Azores. These regions are located in a plate boundary (Eurasia-America for Iceland) and Euraria-Africa for Azores, with earthquakes that occur at shallow depth (less than 20 km), moderate magnitudes (in general less than 7.0) and with strike-slip mechanisms.

The idea is to compare the results in two regions of MAR (Iceland and Azores) in order to obtain a detailed model of the rupture process to be applied to earthquakes in both regions.

Since October 2008 a previus collaboration exists between Prof. Buforn and Prof. Sigbjörnsson of the Earthquake Engineering Research Centre. At present they are collaborating in the study of the fracture process of the Olfus (Iceland) earthquakes at near field using the strong motion data of the ICEARRAY network.

About his work:

"The research topics in which I am interested are:
  • Seismic source
  • Seismological broad band stations
  • Seismicity and seismotectonics
  • Azores-Tunisia
  • Ibero-Maghrebian"
