Dihedral Fourier analysis and applications in statistical optics: A brief introduction

In this talk I will describe the notion of experimental data indexed by symmetries, with particular interest in optical data indexed by (dihedral) symmetries of planar rotations and reversals. The purpose of the talk is to show that there is a formal algebraic connection between experimental results obtained along a dihedral symmetry orbit and the statistical analysis of those data, both at the exploratory and inferential levels. I will also emphasize the role of the dihedral Fourier transform in the determination and interpretations of the underlying orbit invariants.
